The Letters - Mail Without The "e"

This is a fascinating collection of old letters, notes and envelopes. Some in English, some in Ojibwe. It shows how people back in the 1800s wrote, spoke and thought. You’ll see examples of beautiful penmanship, styles of speech and 3-cent stamps. You’ve got envelopes addressed in such a way that you wonder how they ever made it to their destinations. And “e”mail wouldn’t happen for at least another 100 years.

Click each to see the full images. Perhaps you’ll recognize the names of your grandparents, great-aunts, uncles or cousins among them.
