Heritage Barn
The Ganawandaagwad Institute received funding in 2023 to re-roof and reinforce the heritage barn. Shawn Restoule of Restoule Carpentry and Roofing was contracted to complete the work.
The Heritage Barn was relocated in 2022 and is adjacent to the Dokis Museum.

The project was financially supported by the Okikendawt Hydro Revenue & Dokis Community Trust Fund.
History of the Heritage Barn
The barn was originally built in approximately 1925 by the family of Frank W. and Mary Dokis. It was formerly located on their property where it was used as a barn for many years and later for storage by their children. Frank’s grandchildren recall him saying that “it would last if you kept a good roof on it”.
Today, it represents one of the last heritage buildings in Dokis and will now continue to be preserved. It can be used for heritage learning opportunities and teaching activities such as woodworking and carving.
Re-roofing & Bracing
The project provided Shawn with the opportunity to teach his son Kaleb about peeling logs for construction. Considerable labour is required to prepare tree poles for use.
Shawn also salvaged windows for the barn to allow for natural lighting. The old windows came from a cabin on the river that was originally built by a fur trapper who worked for Michel Migisi Dokis. The trapper resided near his trap lines from approximately 1909-1920.
