Hudson’s Bay Company Archive Research Report

The Ganawandaagwad Institute requested an independent search to locate information held within the Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) Archives related to the Dokis/Restoule trading and family histories. Northern Roots Web, a service provider found on a list of HBC researchers was selected because of their specific experience in searching these holdings https://www.gov.mb.ca/chc/archives/hbca/.

We were provided with a research report summarizing the findings along with recommendations for areas to further explore.

The report is based on cited information summarized for those who wish to have an idea of what is available without having to locate each source. However, they are accessible to those who wish to do further reading from the HBC Archives.

You might find content that you will disagree with or know through your own oral history or research to be misunderstood, or misinterpreted. Remember who it was that recorded and saved the information contained within the documents held in the HBC archives. It was a company who our founding Chief operated in direct opposition to and not our own people.

We invite you to read it and interpret it using our own cultural and historical lenses and to retell it with a version that includes our community’s facts and perspectives.
